In Luxembourg today, the European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Vytenis Andriukaitis launched the first meeting of the Joint Action on Health Inequalities ''Health Equity in Europe''. In his speech, the Commissioner expressed his belief that the broad and ambitious scope of this Joint Action would be a key piece of work to promote greater equity in health outcomes and reduce inter-country differences.

The Joint action will contribute to achieving greater equality in health outcomes for all social groups in the participating countries, including a specific focus on migrants and vulnerable groups. Furthermore, it will focus on the socio-economic determinants of health and lifestyle-related health inequalities. The Joint Action's specific objectives are to:

  1. contribute to the planning and development of policies to tackle health inequalities at European, national, regional and local level;
  2. implement actions that provide the best opportunity to tackle health inequalities in participating Member States;
  3. strengthen a cooperative approach in tackling HI and facilitate exchange and learning among Member States;
  4. facilitate transferability of good practices.

Coordinated by the Instituto Superiore di Sanità from Rome, Italy, the Joint action is a 3 year action with an estimated budget of EUR 3.125 million (including the EU contribution of up to EUR 2.5 million) with 25 EU Member States plus Norway, Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina taking part.

The Joint action includes eight work packages that will focus on the promotion, design and implementation of concrete actions that can improve the health and well-being of EU citizens and achieve greater equity in health outcomes across all groups in society.
