African swine fever : the Commission updates veterinary measures to control the disease

Following the Ministerial Conference on tackling the spread of African swine fever (ASF), which took place in Riga on 2 June 2017, the Member States unanimously approved yesterday (in the Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed) a proposal by the Commission to update the control measures to combat the spread of ASF. This update reviews the control measures in place, building on the experience gained over the past years and the latest scientific input, making them more flexible in terms of pig movement and slaughter, while at the same time putting in place additional risk mitigating measures to allow the Member States to more effectively deal with smaller production units and to better deal with wild boar. The draft also updates the regionalisation for Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. The intention is to ensure the long term sustainability of the measures while protecting the EU single market from this serious pig disease. The Commission will continue to follow the evolution of the situation and adapt the measures accordingly.
