Making our food fit for the future – Citizens’ expectations

Latest Eurobarometer published

Around two thirds of Europeans say that they do eat a healthy and sustainable diet most of the time, with affordability being the most common factor that would help respondents adopting a healthier, more sustainable diet. This comes out of the latest Eurobarometer survey entitled Making our food fit for the future – Citizens’ expectations. Other highlights include the fact that food producers are seen as key actors in making the food system sustainable, above public authorities. However, not all Europeans recognise their own role as consumers in improving sustainability. The main drivers influencing food decisions are taste, safety and cost, in that order, and almost all Europeans call on the public and private sectors to improve access to sustainable food and to have information on food sustainability on food labels. The Eurobarometer survey findings will feed into the ongoing work to make our food system more sustainable under the Farm to Fork Strategy. Data from this Eurobarometer was the subject of a presentation on consumer attitudes and views on sustainable food systems at the Farm to Fork conference, on 16 October 2020, by Klaus G. Grunert, Professor at Aarhus University.
